
AED stands for Automated External Difibrillation
AED Units are becoming a more common site in Public Areas such as Sports Centres, Airports , Surgeries and Shopping Centres.
Villages and towns are beginning to train members of the Community in AED use to form part of a community responder group to give early access to defibrillation. A vital part of care the correct and timely use of an Automated External Defibrillator can dramatically improve someone's chance of survival as CPR alone is unlikely to re start a person's heart.
All first Aid Trained individuals will be familiar with the links in the Chain of Survival for a victim of Cardiac Arrest. They are:
- Early Access
- Early CPR
- Early Defibrillation
- Early ALS (Advanced Life Support)
Early Defibrillation is the link in the Chain of Survival most likely to improve survival. research has confirmed that Automated External Defibrillators can be used effectively by minimally trained emergency personnel by lay or community responders and by the family or associates of people at a high risk of sudden cardiac death.
The placement of AED's in the hands of large numbers of people trained in their use proves to be the key intervention for increasing the chances of survival for out of hospital cardiac Arrest Patients.
